Grandma's pea salad recipe turned into a kitchen disaster last Sunday

I was trying to make her old pea and cheese salad for a family gathering but forgot to drain the peas and it turned into a soupy mess that nobody touched. Has anyone else had a family recipe go completely sideways on you because you skipped one step?

Yeah but the real question is, did you try to salvage it by adding more cheese or something halfway through? Cause I've definitely been there where you realize the liquid is too much and you start panic adding dry ingredients to fix it. I once did that with a tuna casserole my aunt always made, added too much milk and then dumped in a whole box of crushed saltines trying to soak it up. Came out tasting like salty paste but my family was too polite to say anything. What did you end up doing with the soupy mess, just toss it?
