Found my great-aunt's recipe for 'Depression Cake' in a box of old papers. No eggs, no butter, no milk. Made it yesterday. Hit 87 years since she wrote it down.

That's such a cool piece of family history to find!

Cool is a stretch. Digging up old family stuff mostly uncovers a bunch of dead people you're obligated to care about now. Rowanj21, it just adds pressure to feel a connection to strangers because you share some genes. Half the time you find out your great-grandfather was kind of a jerk, and then what. It's a burden dressed up as a gift.

Found that exact same type of recipe from my grandma's stuff a few years back. It was for something called "War Cake" from the 1940s. No eggs, no butter, just dates, sugar, water and spices. I made it and it was honestly pretty good. Tastes like a spiced muffin. It's wild knowing these were real meals people ate because they had no choice, not some retro trend.
