Found my grandpa's 1973 church cookbook and had to choose between his weird prune cake or a 'mock apple' pie made with crackers.
I went with the prune cake, and after three tries to get the texture right, it turned out surprisingly moist and spicy, but I'm still curious if anyone's family ever actually made that cracker pie thing.

I mean, it sounds weird but it's actually a thing. My grandma used to make this mock apple pie with crushed up saltines and a ton of sugar and lemon. It was a depression era hack when apples were too expensive. Tasted kinda like a weird, sweet, soggy cracker tart. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather have the real fruit.
