Doubt it's the main reason they wilted.

That Portland client asking the question was probably a real wake up call. I can see what shane_knight means about it maybe not being the only reason, but cutting stems too short definitely hurts how much water they can drink. It makes the flowers struggle right from the start. I've seen it happen before where a simple cutting mistake ruins the whole bouquet's lifespan. It's one of those small details that has a huge effect.
