Walked into a 1920s house in Tacoma and the original oak was under three layers of vinyl

I was there to give a quote for new LVP. Pulled up a corner in the kitchen and saw the old sheet vinyl, then some 70s tile, then another sheet. Under it all was this perfect 2-inch oak strip floor, just covered in black adhesive. The homeowner had no idea it was there. Has anyone else found a hidden gem like that and talked the client into a refinish instead?

Seeing the real wood sealed the deal" shows how we often overlook the good stuff already in front of us.

Hidden gem" is right... I showed a client the cost difference between sanding their old pine and putting down new stuff. Seeing the real wood sealed the deal for them, way more than just my word.

It's like people forgot things were built to LAST back then.
