Question about cutting around a tricky vent cover
A client in a 1920s house told me my cuts for a floor vent looked 'hacked in' and were too big. They were right. I used to just measure the cover and add a quarter inch for wiggle room. Now I trace the exact shape with a paper template and cut it tight. Anyone have a better trick for those old, odd shaped covers?

Use a piece of stiff poster board instead of regular paper. Trace the vent opening exactly with a pencil held sideways against the edge so you get the shape right. Cut your template with a sharp utility knife and test fit it before you cut anything. I do this for all my old house jobs and never get complaints anymore.

Ouch, that's a tough critique to get from a client. Abby_harris has the right idea with a stiff template you can trace perfectly. Getting that exact fit really does make all the difference for those old houses, doesn't it?
