Saw a crew in Austin setting posts without checking for a main line first
They were about to dig a post hole right where the gas line runs to the street, and I had to stop them. The homeowner's utility locate sheet was sitting on their truck dash, completely ignored. How many of you actually verify the marks in the ground before your auger touches dirt?

Maybe it's not always that big a deal... @emma_murray49 makes it sound like a death trap, but sometimes those marks are way off from where the line actually is.

That kind of carelessness gets people killed, plain and simple. It is not just about hitting a gas line, either. A lot of older neighborhoods have abandoned lines that are not on any map but are still full of gas. You can call 811 and still have a nasty surprise waiting a foot down if you do not verify the area with your own eyes first. The marks are there for a reason, and ignoring them is asking for a disaster.
