My uncle told me to always dig the first post hole by hand, not with the auger. Thought he was nuts. Did it on a slope job in Spokane last Tuesday. Found a buried gas line marker 8 inches down.

Yeah, that "first hole by hand" rule is solid. I always do a quick scan with a metal probe now too, after @stone.sarah mentioned water lines. Found an old sprinkler valve that way last spring.
