Had a treated 4x4 snap clean at the ground line on a job in Tacoma last week
It was a post I'd set myself maybe eight years back, and the rot just got it from the inside out. I guess the newer pressure treatments just don't hold up like the old CCA stuff did. Anyone else seeing this happen on older installs?

Man, that's rough. I had the exact same thing happen with a corner post on a deck I built maybe ten years ago. Looked fine on the outside but was just mush inside. What I ended up doing was digging out the old concrete and setting a new post with one of those galvanized steel base connectors right on a fresh footer. It's a pain, but it keeps the wood up out of the dirt so the same thing won't happen again.

Yeah, it's like how so many problems look okay on the surface but are totally rotten underneath. Gotta fix the root cause, not just the visible part.

Totally agree with @kevin_adams, those steel post bases are the way to go now. Saves so much headache down the road.
