Had a gate hinge shear clean off a cedar fence in a windstorm last night.
It was a 4-inch heavy duty brass hinge from a local supplier, and now I'm looking for a stronger steel replacement that can handle our coastal gusts.

Is it really that big a deal if a hinge breaks once?

Fancy play-doh in a windstorm"? That's wild. I had brass hinges on a shed for like 8 years and they held up fine, but I don't live near the coast. I guess the salt spray really does destroy everything eventually. My buddy in Florida has to replace his mailbox hinges every 18 months.

Honestly, brass looks nice but it's basically fancy play-doh in a windstorm. Tbh, you're smart to go for steel, that coastal air will eat anything weaker. Ngl, my own shed door learned that lesson the hard way last spring.
