Got a job in that new subdivision off Route 9 last week and the soil was pure clay

We were setting 40 posts for a vinyl fence and every hole was a fight. My partner, Dave, had the idea to soak the holes with a hose for 20 minutes before we tried to set. It made the clay way easier to work with and saved us probably 3 hours that day. Anyone else have a go-to trick for setting posts in heavy clay?

My buddy had the same problem last year putting in a mailbox. That clay was like concrete. He ended up mixing a bag of sand into the concrete when he set the post. It didn't fight the clay as much and let the water drain better. He said it set up solid and hasn't moved an inch since, even after a wet winter. That little bit of sand made all the difference.

Mia638, I've seen sand cause drainage issues and frost heave later on.

That's how most good fixes work, honestly.
