I was at a sample sale in Brooklyn last year and saw a woman wearing a jacket she'd made from old wool blankets.

Remember seeing a jacket like that and feeling a pang of craft envy. My own attempts at upcycling usually end with me tangled in thread, questioning all my life choices. I once tried to turn an old sweater into a hat and it just became a sad, felted tube with no clear purpose. That jacket sounds amazing, the kind of thing that makes you want to get your act together and finally learn how to use a sewing machine properly.

My first sewing machine project was a pillowcase that somehow turned into a bag. Start with a simple kit from a craft store, the ones with pre-cut fabric and clear instructions. That builds confidence without the tangled thread drama.

Honestly I used to think sewing was just gonna be a mess for me too but @lindagreen's comment about starting with a kit actually makes a lot of sense. That "sad, felted tube" line hit hard because I've made like three of those myself, once from a hoodie I really liked. Maybe I need to just buy one of those pre-cut packs and actually follow the instructions instead of winging it.
