Finally got the collar on my denim jacket pattern to lay flat

I was making a denim jacket for a friend and the collar kept bunching up, no matter how much I pressed it. After three tries, I switched from a regular straight stitch to a longer, narrower zigzag on my Singer machine for the topstitching. It let the thicker fabric layers move a bit and the collar just settled right down. Anyone else have a go-to stitch for heavy fabrics like this?

That's a basting stitch, not topstitching lol.

Oh man, you got me there. My sewing vocab is clearly a bit rusty (or just plain wrong). I'll stick to the basics from now on.

Basting stitch not topstitching" my buddy Sarah once sewed a whole shirt sleeve on inside out and didn't notice til she tried to put it on. Guess @spencermurphy would have spotted that one too!
