Was sure a hoof stand was a waste of money until a vet in Boise said something.

I was trimming a big draft horse for a client and the vet, Dr. Miller, was out for a checkup. He watched me hunch over and said, 'Your back's gonna be shot by fifty, man. That stand isn't for the horse, it's for you.' I bought a basic one the next day. How many of you guys use one regularly, and did it take you a while to get used to it?

Honestly, it's the same with a lot of tools. We skip them thinking they're just extra gear, until someone points out they're actually for our own health. I used to lift everything wrong until a trainer showed me how I was wrecking my knees. That vet is totally right, it's an investment in your own body so you can keep doing the job. Took me a solid month of forcing myself to use my new lifting straps before it felt normal. Now I can't imagine going back, the difference is huge.

My buddy in construction fought using knee pads for ages, said they were slow. Now he swears by them after his joints stopped aching every night.

My old boss had to practically force me to wear gloves for handling rough materials. I thought they made my hands clumsy and hated the feel. After a few weeks the constant small cuts and dry skin just stopped, and my grip actually got better with the right pair. It’s funny how the gear that feels like a hassle at first ends up being the thing that lets you work without hurting.
