Vent: My simple method for handling skittish horses during a trim
I used to struggle with horses that jump at every little noise when I'm working on their feet. Now, I always start by letting them sniff my tools before I begin. It sounds basic, but giving them a moment to check out the rasp or nippers cuts the tension right away. For instance, I had a mare last week who was eyeing my hoof pick like it was a snake, so I held it out for her to investigate. After that, she stood much calmer for the whole shoeing job. It's a small step, but it makes the whole process smoother for both of us.

Letting them sniff works great. My old gelding would spook at the rasp sound. Started resting it against his leg first, let him feel the vibration. He got used to the buzz before I even started filing. Now he barely flinches. That initial introduction changed everything for us.

Yeah, @averyc80, I rest it on their shoulder first for vibration.
