Trying my grandma's pie crust recipe was a DISASTER the first time
I was in my kitchen last Thanksgiving, and the dough just turned into a crumbly mess that wouldn't hold together. I realized I'd been using cold butter straight from the fridge, but her handwritten note actually said 'cool, not cold'. Has anyone else had a family recipe hinge on one weird little detail like that?

Wait, you used butter straight from the fridge? That's wild. My grandma would have a fit, she always left hers on the counter for like twenty minutes. That one word changes everything.

@ivan522 @felixb25 but does that softness tip apply to pie crust too?

My aunt was the same way, she had a special butter dish just for room temp spreading. It's a whole different food when it's soft, right? I tried using cold butter for cookies once and the dough was a crumbly mess. Had to let the whole thing sit for an hour to fix it. That little bit of planning makes or breaks a recipe sometimes.
