Spent $35 on a special spice grinder for my grandma's curry paste

I wanted to get the texture just right like she used to make, but the motor burned out after two uses trying to grind lemongrass and galangal. Should I just go back to using the old granite mortar and pestle, or is there a heavy duty grinder that can handle hard roots?

Been there! I bought a fancy blender for nut butters that started smoking like a campfire. For those hard roots, maybe look into a heavy duty restaurant grade wet grinder? They're built for that stuff. My grandma's mortar and pestle is still undefeated though, just takes some elbow grease.

Ugh, modern gadgets always seem to break on the simple stuff!

Yeah, brianfox is right about the mortar and pestle. New stuff breaks down but the old ways just work. Sometimes simple is better.
