My grandma's 'secret ingredient' was a total accident for 20 years

I've been making her famous chili since I was a kid, always adding a full tablespoon of baking soda because that's what the handwritten card said. My cousin called me last week, laughing, because she found the original recipe book and it clearly said 'baking POWDER' for a little lift in the cornbread on the side. For two decades, I've been neutralizing the acid in the tomatoes (and creating a weird foam) for no reason. Has anyone else had a family recipe with a wild misread that stuck around?

That's a hilarious kitchen mix-up.

Actually, my sister used baking soda instead of powder last week.
