Just realized my mom's soup recipe needs a whole afternoon to sit

She always said 'let it rest' but never explained that means four hours off the heat. I rushed it for years and wondered why the flavors were flat. All that waiting felt pointless until I finally tried it her way. Now I get it, but man, I wish she'd been clearer about the time.

Honestly "four hours off the heat" is the kind of vague mom instruction that makes sense 20 years later. Tbh you probably thought it was like, ten minutes to cool down. Ngl, I'd have rushed it too.

What if the waiting time changes with the weather, like @rayallen's mom hinted?

See I actually disagree, moms know you learn better by doing it wrong first. If she said four hours you'd just watch the clock, but having to figure out the 'why' makes it stick. That vague advice forces you to pay attention to how the flavors change, not just follow a timer. It's annoying in the moment but you never forget the lesson once you get it.
