I used to think my grandma's pie crust recipe was too simple to be good

Then I visited the little bakery in Sisters, Oregon, and saw they were selling a 'rustic apple tart' that looked exactly like hers. The baker told me his secret was just flour, salt, lard, and ice water, no fancy ingredients. It made me realize the old way is often the best way. Has anyone else had a family recipe proven right by a pro?

Huh, I gotta disagree a bit. Just because a pro uses simple ingredients doesn't mean your grandma's recipe is the same level. Sometimes it's the technique and proportions that make it work, not just the stuff you put in. I've eaten plenty of "rustic" pies that were just dry and sad.

Saw a whole thread about how the cheap store brand is actually the same stuff as the name brand. Just comes in a different box.
