Grandma's cast iron skillet got ruined at a church potluck and now I never lend it out
I brought my great-grandma's old Wagner skillet to the St. Mark's Methodist potluck last June, and someone used it to cook something super acidic and scrub it with soap. There was rust spots all over the bottom when I got it back, took me 3 rounds of seasoning to fix. Anyone else have a family piece get wrecked by someone who just didn't get it?

Yeah someone cooked a tomato sauce in my mom's old Griswold and I still get a twitch every time I see an acidic recipe.

Oh man, I gotta say though - soap isn't actually the enemy here lol. Modern dish soap is totally fine for seasoned cast iron, it's the lye in old school soap that was bad. Your grandma's pan probably just needed a good scrub and a fresh season after that tomato sauce incident. Still sucks that someone treated it like a regular pan though, I'd be mad too.
