My grandpa's old hand plane cuts better than my new one ever did
I inherited this beat up Stanley No. 4 from my grandpa about 6 months ago. It looked rough, rust spots, chipped handle. I was about to toss it and just keep using my $80 modern plane. But I sharpened the blade, set the chip breaker right, and took it to some pine board. Cut like butter. No chatter, no tearout. My new one chatters on that same wood every time. Guess older stuff was just built better. Has anyone else had luck with an old tool over a new one?

Buddy's grandpa gave him an old saw, cuts way smoother than a new one he bought.

Oh man, @the_jade I totally get that. My buddy's grandpa gave me an old hand plane once and it cuts better than anything I've bought new in years.
