I watched a client use a washcloth on her face for a full minute and now I get why her skin is always red.

Oh man, that's rough. I've seen people scrub their faces like they're cleaning a pan. It's not a stain you're trying to rub out. That kind of rubbing just breaks down your skin barrier. You can get all the redness and irritation without actually getting cleaner. Gentle patting works way better, but some people just go at it.

Watched my roommate attack her face with a towel after the gym once (looked like she was sanding a table). Totally get what @the_hannah is saying. It made that horrible squeaky sound, you know? Her skin was bright red and tight for hours. I just use my hands to wash now, super light circles, and then pat dry with a paper towel. The patting thing feels weird at first but it's so much kinder.

My derm actually told me a full minute of gentle circular motion with a soft cloth is fine for some skin types. I get what @the_hannah is saying about scrubbing, but a washcloth itself isn't the problem.
