PSA: Switched from a flat network to a proper VLAN setup at our office

I always figured it was extra work for no real gain... until a printer firmware update went rogue and took down the whole floor for an hour. Segregating traffic with VLANs on our Cisco gear fixed that mess instantly. Anyone else have a simple change that stopped a major headache?

Yeah, calling VLANs "extra work for no real gain" is the kind of thing you say right before something breaks bad. It's not just about stopping one bad printer, it's about keeping everything else safe when something goes wrong. That hour of downtime for a whole floor is way more work than setting up the VLANs would have been. It's basic network hygiene, like locking your front door.

Totally, I read a case study that backs up what @karenf40 said about it being basic security.
