Am I the only one who tried to fix a switch with a vacuum cleaner?

Our core switch in the Atlanta office started acting up, so I figured a quick dusting might help and used the office vacuum on it. The static shock I got from the hose was so strong it actually made the switch reboot and come back online perfectly. Has anyone else had a weird fix actually work on network gear?

Ever think static was just a nuisance? I used to worry about it around gear, but I once had a router that wouldn't hold a config until I shuffled across the carpet and touched it. The little zap seemed to reset something internal. Your vacuum story makes me wonder if we're just giving these boxes a good old fashioned kick sometimes.

That "good old fashioned kick" idea is spot on. Makes me wonder if static acts like a tiny power surge. Not enough to fry anything, but just enough to clear out a stuck bit in the memory. It's like the electronics get confused and the shock tells them to start over from scratch. We might be doing a hard reset without even knowing it.

Totally thought it was just bad luck before.
