A vendor at a conference said 'zero trust is just a marketing term for good network design' and it stuck with me.

He was right. We spent six months on a big zero trust project, and the core changes were just proper segmentation and tighter access controls we should have had anyway. Are we just paying for new labels on old ideas?

Exactly, it's just security basics with a fancy new coat of paint.

You know, I always hated that "just marketing" take, but our last project proved it. We basically just set up real VLANs for the first time and finally made people use the VPN. The zero trust report called it "microsegmentation" and "identity-aware proxies," but it was just closing doors we left open years ago. Felt like getting a trophy for cleaning your room.
