Talked to a building super about door dwell times and it shifted how I adjust sensors

I was swapping out a door motor on a 1997 Otis at a 12-story building downtown last Tuesday. The building super came by, older guy named Frank, and he asked why I was setting the door dwell at the factory spec of 3 seconds. He said the tenants in that building are mostly elderly and they need at least 5 seconds to feel safe getting on and off. I told him the spec is the spec, but he pointed out that we get fewer service calls if people don't rush and trip. So I adjusted the sensors to a wider pattern and bumped the dwell up to 4.5 seconds. He was right - the door felt more generous and less aggressive. Anyone else find that sticking too close to the manual causes more headaches than listening to what the building actually needs?

Sounds like you overthought a door adjustment.

Yeah man, sometimes the simple stuff is the hardest to just get done.
