Just realized everyone swears by that new synthetic hoist rope, but I'm sticking with the old stuff

Last week in a high rise downtown, I saw a crew replacing a main line with that slick synthetic everyone talks about. Three years ago on a similar job, we had to cut out a section that got chewed up by a misaligned sheave in under six months, something steel cable would have just shrugged off. Anyone else had a bad run with it and gone back to wire rope?

That hidden edge on the beam guard is exactly the kind of thing that worries me. It seems like the job site itself has to be perfect for this stuff. Are we just swapping one set of problems for another? You trade off weight and handling for having to baby it against every single snag point.

Remember that retrofit job in the old mill? Buddy's crew put in that new synthetic line. A hidden sharp edge on a beam guard they missed sliced clean through it in a week. They had the steel cable back on the truck by Friday.
