Hot take: spending $600 on a laser alignment tool for the elevator rails was the best money I ever spent
Saved me three full days of shimming on a 12-stop install in downtown Boston, has anyone else had that kind of time savings or did I just get lucky?

Used to think those laser tools were overpriced and just a gimmick, honestly. Then I borrowed one from a buddy for a 8-stop job in an old brick building and it cut my shim time by like half. I was a total skeptic before that, but now I get why people drop the cash on them. Saved me from pulling my hair out on those tight spots where the rails were way off.

Ngl, reading faith_price7's 'pulling my hair out' comment hits too close to home. Honestly, the only thing worse than shimming rails by hand is realizing you could have been done three days earlier if you'd just coughed up the cash. Tbh, that laser tool probably pays for itself in saved sanity alone, especially in those old buildings where nothing is square. At this point I'd sell my left kidney for anything that cuts shim time by half, but hey, at least my hairline is safe.
