40 years in the trade and I just learned I've been leveling rails wrong this whole time

Old timer I worked with back in the 80s showed me his method and I just copied it forever. Last week a young guy fresh out of school pulls out a laser and shows me the difference. My rails were off by 3/16 on a 10 floor job. Felt like an idiot. Anyone else have a rookie teach them something that made you question everything?

See that's the thing with lasers though... they only show you what the lens sees, not what the finished wall is gonna do. I had a kid show me his digital level once and I asked him if he checked the studs for twist first. He just stared at me. You might not have been as wrong as you think if you were working with wood framing that settles and moves. That laser is only good if everything else is perfectly straight and dry... which it never is.

The 2x4s in my last house had so much twist in them you could've used them as corkscrews. @leo603, how do you usually deal with that when you're trying to get a straight line off studs that are basically pretzels?
