TIL the weirdest thing can be a diagnostic tool at a thrift store

I was at the Goodwill over on Maple Street yesterday, looking for old radios to practice on. I saw this beat up 90s boombox with a 'tested, works' sticker. The price was $12, so I figured why not. I plugged it in right there at the outlet by the furniture section. The power light came on, but when I hit play, the tape deck made this loud, rhythmic *thump-thump-thump* sound, like a tiny heartbeat. No music, just this steady mechanical thumping. A lady looking at lamps jumped and stared at me like I'd summoned a ghost. I unplugged it fast, but I was cracking up. It was so clearly a seized capstan motor or a broken belt slapping around, but the sound was just absurdly perfect. Have any of you ever found a device that failed in such a hilariously specific way?

My toaster once screamed like a banshee.

A screaming toaster is next level. Did it actually make toast after that or was that its final act?

Honestly, that's the best kind of failure. It's like appliances develop their own little personalities right before they die. My old dryer started humming the first few notes of "Shave and a Haircut" every time the cycle ended. It's weirdly comforting, like they're putting on one last show for you.
