Saw the difference in solder joints after I switched to a proper temp-controlled iron

Been fixing stuff for about 8 years. For the first 5 I used a $15 iron from a hardware store and just guessed on heat. Joints looked okay but I got a lot of callbacks on audio gear I repaired. Finally bought a Hakko FX-888D three years ago. First time I pulled a joint off a guitar amp board I could see the wetting was completely different. No cold joints, no cracking after a week. That single tool cut my rework rate from maybe one in five jobs down to maybe one in twenty. Anybody else have a tool that quietly changed their game like that?

That butter knife comparison is dead on, that's exactly what it feels like. Once you get real heat control you start noticing all the little things like how much faster the solder flows and how the flux actually activates instead of just burning off. The first time I redid an old Fender amp with a decent iron I felt like I had been doing it wrong for years.

Yeah, that sounds about right. My game changer was realizing I could just use a $20 Weller from a pawn shop as long as I cleaned the tip every five seconds. But seriously, a good iron is like switching from a butter knife to a chef's knife. You don't notice how bad you had it until you try the real thing. What kind of gear are you mostly fixing with it?
