Had a 90s boombox with a stuck tape door that wouldn't budge

The owner said he'd tried everything, even a small pry tool. I was about to start taking the whole front panel off, which looked like a huge job. On a whim, I hit the eject button and gave the side of the unit a firm, open-handed slap right next to the mechanism. The door popped right open. I guess it just needed a percussive maintenance reminder. Anyone else have a weird physical fix that actually worked on an old piece of gear?

Oh man, that's the best fix. My old VCR would eat tapes and the eject button did nothing. I was ready to take it apart, but my dad just lifted the front of it about an inch and dropped it on the carpet. Thing spit the tape out like nothing happened. Sometimes you just gotta remind the machine who's boss with a good thump, lol.

Haha, love it! But honestly the real trick is knowing when NOT to thump. I had a laser disc player that would get stuck and I tried the percussive maintenance approach and broke the laser assembly. Learned the hard way that old mechanical stuff can handle a drop but finicky optical drives cant. Bet your dad knew exactly how much force that VCR could take.
