Why nobody talks about how easy it is to reverse polarity on a simple outlet swap

I spent 15 years zipping through swap jobs until a homeowner pulled out a plug tester and showed me 5 out of 7 were backwards. Has anyone else had that moment where something so basic got you?

That whole plug tester thing is way overblown honestly. On a standard outlet, polarity only matters for a small fraction of devices like some old lamps or certain electronics with a switch. Most modern stuff has internal power supplies that don't care which way the hot and neutral go. People act like reversed polarity is some huge fire hazard but the reality is the breaker still trips the same way. Fun fact: plenty of houses built before the 60s didn't even have polarized plugs and they're still standing. The real issue is when people don't properly tighten the screws or leave exposed wire hanging out. That plug tester panic is just another way for the home inspection industry to scare homeowners into paying for unnecessary fixes. Focus on getting the ground wire right and the box dead centered on the wall, that's where the real quality shows.

Read somewhere that the real danger with reversed polarity is on screw-shell lamps where the hot wire goes to the threaded part instead of the center tab, makes it way easier to get zapped changing a bulb. Most modern stuff handles it fine though, you're right about that.
