Vent: Almost burned down a house in Phoenix last month

I was pulling new wire in an older attic and the insulation was so chewed up by rats that I nicked a hot line without realizing it. Started smelling smoke 20 minutes later and found the spot glowing against some loose fiberglass. Has anyone else dealt with attics that are basically fire hazards waiting to happen?

oh man, my buddy had the exact same thing happen in a Tucson flip house. he was running some speaker wire and nicked an old knob and tube line that was still live, didn't even know it was there. he smelled something chemical like half an hour later and pulled down a panel to find the wire glowing red against some 70s cellulose insulation, said the whole attic smelled like a campfire. now he checks every single circuit with a non-contact ticker before he even sticks his head up there, no matter what the owner says.

Guy I know did the same thing running cable in a Phoenix rental. Pulled back some blown-in insulation and found a live wire that had been arcing against a duct for god knows how long, just lucky the whole place didn't go up.
