My apprentice said 'why are we taping these splices if the box is full of goop anyway' during a wet location job last Thursday.

It made me realize we were just doing it out of habit, so now I'm asking, what's your actual rule for when taping inside a sealed enclosure is still necessary?

Totally get that. We used to tape every single splice in a weatherproof box until a new guy asked the same thing. Now we only tape if the wires are under real strain or if the goop might not fully cover a sharp edge. It saved us a ton of time on a big parking lot light job last month. The habit is hard to break, but it makes sense when you stop and think about it.

Our crew cut tape use by half last year.
