My sump pump quit during the April thaw and I didn't notice for 2 days

Last month we had that big melt and my basement flooded about 3 inches. The pump was 9 years old and I guess it just gave up quietly, no alarm or anything. I only caught it because I went down to grab a box of Christmas lights and my boots splashed. Cost me about $400 in shop vac rentals and a new pump from Home Depot on 99 St. Has anyone else had a sump pump fail silently like that, or do you guys run some kind of sensor or backup system?

At least you got a new pump out of it. Silver lining: free indoor pool for 2 days!
