Garage door spring snapped during a cold snap, what a mess

Last Tuesday morning at like 6am I went to leave for work and my garage door just slammed down hard. The torsion spring above the door had snapped clean in two, probably from the -30 degree weather we had. I had no idea a fix would run me $450 with parts and labor from a local company in St. Albert. Has anyone else had this happen in deep winter, and did you go with a heavier gauge spring to prevent it again?

-30 degrees and 450 bucks, guess the springs felt the cold too.
