Changed my mind about spray foam insulation after last January

I was dead set against spray foam for years. Thought it was overpriced and heard too many horror stories about off-gassing. Then we had that cold snap last January where my basement hit 6 degrees even with the furnace running full blast. My neighbour across the alley got his crawlspace done the week before and his house stayed warm without the heat kicking on as much. I asked him what he paid and he said $2,400 for the whole thing. That got me thinking. So I called a guy from Sherwood Park, got a quote, and finally bit the bullet. Honestly the difference this fall has been night and day. The basement is actually livable now. Has anyone else had a similar turnaround on something they were stubborn about?

Did you check if they used closed cell or open cell foam? I went with closed cell in my crawlspace after that same cold snap and it made a huge difference, but I think open cell is better for soundproofing if that matters to you. One thing nobody warned me about was the smell for the first few days even with the stuff they said was low VOC, so I'd run a fan and crack a window if you get it done. The moisture barrier in the basement has been way more stable too now that the temperature doesn't swing so much.
