Caulk was my enemy until I learned the tape trick

I spent 4 hours last spring caulking my bathroom baseboards in Edmonton and it looked like a toddler did it. Then my buddy who does renovations for a living saw it and laughed, told me to put painter's tape on both sides before running the bead. First try with tape and a $8 caulking tool and the lines are PERFECT, no more smearing everywhere. Why did nobody tell me this sooner? Anyone else have a basic DIY skill that took them way too long to figure out?

Tape trick changed my life too, but my first attempt I put the tape on AFTER caulking, so it just peeled the bead right off the wall. Second try I left the tape on for like three days until it hardened and then ripped half the paint off. Third try I finally got it right, and now I feel like a legitimate adult who can do things. Still won't touch drywall mud though, I have the opposite of a light touch.
