TIL Edmonton has a specific rule about how many trees you can plant on your boulevard
Found it buried in the city's 'yard and boulevard' bylaws online. Anyone know if they actually enforce this?

Ever wonder why they have those rules about planting near sidewalks? My neighbor planted a maple way too close to the curb and its roots lifted a whole section of concrete. The city made them remove it and pay for the repair, so they definitely notice when it starts to mess things up. It's a pain for everyone when that happens.

Gotta feel for the people who plant a tree thinking they're doing something good and then get slapped with a fine. It's not like most folks are trying to cause damage on purpose. They probably just see a spot that looks empty and think it could use some green. The city really ought to hand out a simple pamphlet or something when people buy a house so they know the rules up front. Getting hit with a surprise bill for a tree you already planted is just plain rough.

Yeah, the real problem is when those roots hit the underground utilities. They put those rules in place because a tree root can wreck a sewer line or crack a water main, and then the city's on the hook for a huge repair bill. It's not about them hating trees, it's about avoiding a massive headache later. They probably only enforce it if someone complains or if it's obviously causing damage.
