Spent 3 hours looking for a leak under my sink that was just a loose fitting
Had a slow drip under the kitchen sink that drove me nuts for a week. Checked every pipe and connection like 5 times before my neighbor Gary came over and pointed out the compression nut on the hot water line was barely hand tight. Took me maybe 2 minutes to fix after that. Why do I always assume the problem has to be complicated?

Oh the humble compression nut, gets us EVERY time. I've gotta gently push back on calling it hand tight though. Hand tight on a compression fitting actually means snugged down with a wrench usually, not just finger tight. Gary probably meant it was barely catching. Those nuts need a quarter turn or so past hand tight to actually seat the ferrule right. Either way, it's always the simplest thing that hides in plain sight, makes me feel like a real dummy every time.

OH GOSH, this hits WAY too close to home. I swear my plumbing problems are like a sitcom where I'm the overthinking star and the audience is laughing at me. Gary is a REAL hero for spotting that, but honestly, the fact that we ALL have a Gary in our lives says a lot about our collective handyman skills. I had a similar thing happen with a toilet where I replaced the whole flapper and chain setup before realizing the handle was just jammed. You know, because the universe wants to remind me that I'm not a professional plumber, just a person who can afford a wrench. But hey, at least now you've got a story to tell at parties about the time you spent three hours fighting with air basically.
