Appreciation post: The city compost bin changed my garden game
I started using Edmonton's green cart compost in my flower beds last spring just to save on buying soil. But after 6 months of mixing it in, my tomato plants grew twice as big as the year before. I didn't expect the nutrients to make that much of a difference, honestly. My neighbor even asked what fertilizer I was using and I just pointed at the bin. Has anyone else noticed a big boost from using city compost?

Your mileage may vary, but a few tomatoes don't really prove much.

Well actually I gotta push back a little on that. A few tomatoes might not prove much to a scientist but for a home gardener that's a pretty clear sign something's working. The city compost has way more organic matter than most bagged soils and it breaks down slowly feeding plants all season. I've been using it for two years now on my whole vegetable patch and the difference is pretty obvious to anyone who sees my garden compared to my neighbors who still buy the cheap stuff. Plus the city tests their compost for heavy metals and contaminants so it's safer than some random pile you'd get off Facebook. Have you actually tried it yourself or are you just guessing?
