Stopped buying drawer organizers, now I use cereal boxes

I used to drop $30 at the store on plastic bins for my kitchen drawers every few months. Then I noticed my oatmeal box fit perfectly in the silverware drawer after I cut the top off flat. Since last fall, I've redone all three drawers in my apartment in Portland with just boxes from my own recycling bin. Has anyone else tried using sturdy food packaging instead of buying new storage stuff?

My friend Sarah actually did this exact thing with her spice drawer. She used those little snack box inserts from granola bars and cut them down to fit, and now her whole cabinet looks like a weird cardboard maze. She told me it works great until you accidentally grab the wrong box and dump old rice all over the counter, which happened to her twice. But she still refuses to buy real organizers, so I guess the savings are worth the chaos.
