Ngl I think the whole 'sear everything first' rule is overrated

Honestly I tried browning my chuck roast before throwing it in the slow cooker for like two years and always ended up with dry meat. Then I skipped the sear one time because I was running late for school and it came out way more tender. The flavor difference was so tiny my family didn't even notice. Anyone else find that browning just isn't worth the extra mess?

My buddy swears by searing burgers but his grill catches fire every Single time.

Oh man, this reminds me of something that happened to my friend Jenna. She was all about that sear life with her pork shoulder for years, said it was the only way to get that crust. Then her dog knocked over her bag of charcoal right as she was about to sear one Sunday and she just threw the meat in the crockpot raw out of frustration. Her pulled pork came out so juicy and tender her husband asked what she did different. She told me the only thing that changed was skipping the sear and he was like don't ever sear it again. Now she just seasons it heavy and lets the slow cooker do everything. The mess from splattering oil alone is enough to make me skip it.
