My sister swore by dumping frozen chicken in the slow cooker and I thought she was nuts

My sister kept telling me to just toss frozen chicken breasts into the slow cooker with a jar of salsa and walk away. I argued with her for like a year saying it wouldn't cook right or it'd be dangerous. Finally last Tuesday I was in a rush before my shift and gave it a shot with 3 frozen breasts and a $2.50 jar of medium salsa. Left it on low for 8 hours and came home to perfectly shredded chicken that wasn't dry at all. She was right and I hate admitting that. Has anyone else had a family member give you a tip that you stubbornly ignored for way too long?

Wait, just to be clear the USDA actually says it's fine to cook frozen chicken in a slow cooker as long as it hits 165 degrees, so you weren't totally off base being cautious but she wasn't wrong either. Your sister's salsa chicken trick is a legit lifesaver though.

@alice445 is totally right that the USDA gives the green light as long as you hit that 165. I actually tested this last month with a frozen chicken breast and a meat thermometer, and it came out perfectly safe and tender. The salsa trick really is genius because the acidity helps break down the meat while it cooks from frozen.
