My neighbor swore by adding a can of cream of mushroom soup to every roast...

I always thought it was a shortcut that would ruin the flavor. But last Sunday I was out of beef broth and desperate, so I dumped in a can of Campbell's cream of mushroom instead. The gravy came out so rich and thick, I actually liked it better than my usual recipe. Has anyone else had good results with random canned soups in their slow cooker?

That "ruin the flavor" thing is exactly what I thought too. My grandma used to put cream of celery in everything and I swore it was nasty until I tried her pot roast recipe.

You ever had a buddy who swore off canned soup entirely until his aunt brought over her green bean casserole for thanksgiving? He told me he watched her dump two cans of cream of mushroom in there and almost walked out, but one bite later he was asking for the recipe. Sometimes those old school shortcuts just hit different, even if they look scary on paper.

@p the_jake your buddy almost missed out on the magic of those shortcuts. Little secret though: cream of celery does work better in some dishes than cream of mushroom, so maybe give that a shot next time. Either way, grandma always knew what she was doing with those cans.
