Dumped a whole chicken in the slow cooker after a farmer's market tip in Portland
I was at the farmer's market last fall in Portland and this older lady selling eggs told me to stop cutting up chicken for stews. Said just toss a whole bird in the slow cooker with broth and herbs, cook on low for 8 hours, then pull the meat off. I thought she was crazy but tried it. Worked way better than my usual cubed breast method, meat came out super tender and I had bones left for stock. Has anyone else switched to whole chickens in the crock pot?

That lady knew what she was talking about, whole chicken in the slow cooker is a GAME changer. I did the same thing after a friend from Oregon told me about it and now I never bother cutting up any bird for stews or soups. The meat literally falls off the bones and the leftover stock is SO much richer than what I used to get from just bones.

Right? The stock is night and day different. I did a whole chicken in mine last week with just onions and garlic, and that broth turned into jelly in the fridge. So much better than picking bones clean first.
