The $1.50 paperback that fell apart in my hands at the laundromat

Picked up a 1984 horror novel at a library sale for a buck and a half, thought it was a steal. By page 40 the spine cracked clean down the middle and pages started raining out like confetti, I had to hold the whole thing together with a rubber band just to finish it. Has anyone else had a thrift find that disintegrated before you even hit the halfway point?

Man, that's brutal! I've definitely had a thrift store book start shedding pages like a molting cat, so I feel your pain with that rubber band fix.

Rubber bands are a solid stopgap, but you gotta upgrade to binder clips, @christopher67. They hold way better and don't leave that weird sticky residue all over the cover. Also, grab some book tape from the craft store, it's like three bucks and saves you from re-gluing every other week. I had a copy of a fantasy novel fall apart mid-read once, pages everywhere, so I feel your pain on a deep level. Once you tape the spine from the inside, it buys you another couple years easy. Just don't go overboard with the glue or you'll end up with crunchy pages.
