Found out I was judging book covers all wrong for decades
I always grabbed books with the flashiest covers at garage sales, thinking they were the hidden gems. Then I picked up this plain green 1978 geology field guide for $0.50 and it had hand-drawn maps in the margins from the original owner. That's when I realized the boring covers often hide the coolest stuff inside. Anyone else had a moment where you realized you were picking books for the wrong reasons?

I found a copy of "The World of Carbon" from 1962 at a yard sale last summer. It had this plain gray cover with just the title in small block letters, looked like a textbook nobody wanted. I bought it for a quarter because I felt bad for the lady running the sale. Turns out the previous owner had filled the margins with their own notes about local rock formations and even tucked in a small map of a creek bed near my town. I spent three afternoons following those notes and found a spot where you can see fossilized shells in the limestone. Now I actually get excited about the dullest looking books because who knows what kind of treasure map might be hiding in there.
